The Second Annual “SPIRIT of AFRICA” event with Le Grand Dakar Restaurant and Soul of Brooklyn partnering for day-long celebration of arts, culture and self-expression at Grand Block Party and 2010 Awards.  Salutes: 50th anniversary of the independence of 17 nations of Africa; honorees Dr. Adelaide Sanford, Brenda Brunson Bey, Brenda Green, Bill T. Jones, Salif Cisse, Jeffrey Wright; and the transitioned Abbey Lincoln and Montego Joe.  Thiam says the event will also acknowledge  key upcoming milestones: 20th anniversary of the community’s “recovery” of the African Burial Grounds and the 50th anniversary of Kwame Brathwaite and Elombe Brath’s activation of “Black is Beautiful” and wearable art concepts.
